Esto es en parte porque, por coincidencia, est\u00e1 rodeada por una\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/observatorio.info\/reflection_nebulae.html\">nebulosa de reflexi\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0deslumbrante. La pulsante\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RS_Puppis\">RS Puppis<\/a>, la estrella m\u00e1s brillante del centro de imagen, es diez veces m\u00e1s masiva que el Sol y, de media, 15.000 veces m\u00e1s luminosa. RS Pup es una\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aavso.org\/types-variables\">estrella variable<\/a>\u00a0de\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/observatorio.info\/ap960110.html\">tipo cefeida<\/a>, una clase de estrellas con una\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu\/hbase\/astro\/cepheid.html#c2\">brillantez<\/a>\u00a0que se utiliza para estimar las distancias a las galaxias cercanas, uno de los primeros pasos para establecer la escala de\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Escalera_de_distancias_c%C3%B3smicas\">distancias c\u00f3smicas<\/a>. Como\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/news\/eso0805\/\">RS Pup pulsa<\/a>\u00a0durante un periodo de unos 40 d\u00edas, los cambios regulares del brillo tambi\u00e9n se observan a lo largo de la nebulosa retrasados en el tiempo, es decir, en un\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eco_de_luz\">eco de luz<\/a>. Mediante las mediciones de este retraso y del tama\u00f1o angular de la nebulosa, la conocida\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.physics.umd.edu\/icpe\/newsletters\/n34\/marshmal.htm\">velocidad de la luz<\/a>\u00a0permite a los astr\u00f3nomos determinar geom\u00e9tricamente la distancia de\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aavso.org\/vsots_rspup\">RS Pup<\/a>\u00a0en 6.500 a\u00f1os luz, con un error notablemente peque\u00f1o de unos 90\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov\/docs\/StarChild\/questions\/question19.html\">a\u00f1os luz<\/a>. Su brillo oscila entre\u00a0<a title=\"Magnitud aparente\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magnitud_aparente\">magnitud aparente<\/a>\u00a0+6,52 y +7,67 con un per\u00edodo de 41,39 d\u00edas.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RS_Puppis#cite_note-2\">2<\/a><\/sup>\u200b Es la \u00fanica cefeida que se encuentra rodeada por una gran\u00a0<a title=\"Nebulosa\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebulosa\">nebulosa<\/a>, formada por gas y polvo muy fino que refleja parte de la luz emitida por la estrella.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tiene una\u00a0<a title=\"Temperatura efectiva\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temperatura_efectiva\">temperatura efectiva<\/a>\u00a0de 4820\u00a0<a title=\"Kelvin\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kelvin\">K<\/a>\u00a0y una masa 10,3 veces mayor que la\u00a0<a title=\"Masa solar\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masa_solar\">masa solar<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Nielson_3-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RS_Puppis#cite_note-Nielson-3\">3<\/a><\/sup>\u200b Su radio es entre 174 y 198 veces m\u00e1s grande que el del\u00a0<a title=\"Sol\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sol\">Sol<\/a>, lo que equivale a unas 0,9\u00a0<a title=\"Unidad astron\u00f3mica\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unidad_astron%C3%B3mica\">UA<\/a>.
