Los astr\u00f3nomos quieren saber por qu\u00e9 se est\u00e1n apagando sus formaciones estelares.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Esa es tambi\u00e9n la intenci\u00f3n del primer gran proyecto llevado a cabo por Canad\u00e1 con uno de los telescopios m\u00e1s grandes del mundo. Un nuevo programa cient\u00edfico, denominado Estudio del Entorno de Virgo Trazado en Mon\u00f3xido de Carbono (<strong>VERTICO<\/strong>, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) est\u00e1 investigando de manera minuciosa c\u00f3mo el entorno acaba con las galaxias.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/b4\/ALMA_and_a_Starry_Night.jpg\" alt=\"Resultado de imagen de Large Millimeter Array (ALMA)\" width=\"450\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Como investigador principal de VERTICO, soy el encargado de dirigir al equipo de 30 expertos que estamos utilizando el <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almaobservatory.org\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Atacama Large Millimeter Array <\/a>(<strong>ALMA<\/strong>) para mapear en alta resoluci\u00f3n el hidr\u00f3geno molecular ( <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/astrophysics\/focus-areas\/how-do-stars-form-and-evolve\" target=\"_blank\">el combustible del que se alimentan las formaciones estelares<\/a>), en 51 galaxias de la agrupaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s cercana a nuestra situaci\u00f3n, el <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap150804.html\" target=\"_blank\">C\u00famulo de Virgo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Creada en 2013 gracias a una inversi\u00f3n de 1.400 millones de d\u00f3lares, ALMA es una <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almaobservatory.org\/en\/about-alma-at-first-glance\/\" target=\"_blank\">red de antenas de radio conectadas a una altitud de 5.000 metros en el desierto de Atacama<\/a>, en el norte de Chile. El programa forma parte de un acuerdo internacional entre <strong>Europa, Estados Unidos, Canad\u00e1, Jap\u00f3n, Corea del Sur, Taiw\u00e1n y Chile<\/strong>. ALMA, el proyecto astron\u00f3mico terrestre m\u00e1s grande en funcionamiento, posee el telescopio de longitud de onda milim\u00e9trica m\u00e1s avanzado del mundo, id\u00f3neo para el estudio de densas nubes de gas fr\u00edo a partir de las cuales nacen las estrellas y que no pueden ser percibidas mediante el uso de luz visible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los grandes programas de investigaci\u00f3n de ALMA, como VERTICO, est\u00e1n dise\u00f1ados para abordar ciertos desaf\u00edos cient\u00edficos que puedan desencadenar avances importantes en este campo.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">C\u00famulos de galaxias<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"MoGwB5jFKhgxWM:\" que interact\u00faan con lo que las rodea (el medio intergal\u00e1ctico) y entre ellas son aspectos que tienen mucha influencia en su capacidad para crear estrellas. Sin embargo, a\u00fan es un <strong>misterio c\u00f3mo este ambiente dicta la vida y la muerte de las galaxias.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los <a href=\"https:\/\/imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov\/science\/objects\/clusters.html\" target=\"_blank\"> c\u00famulos de galaxias <\/a>son los entornos m\u00e1s extensos y extremos del universo y llegan a contener <strong>cientos e incluso miles de galaxias<\/strong>. All\u00ed donde hay masa, hay <strong>gravedad<\/strong>, y la inmensa <a href=\"#\" onclick=\"referencia('fuerza gravitacional',event); return false;\">fuerza gravitacional<\/a> presente en los c\u00famulos hace que las las galaxias se desplacen a velocidades vertiginosas, a menudo miles de kil\u00f3metros por segundo, y calienta el <a href=\"#\" onclick=\"referencia('plasma',event); return false;\">plasma<\/a> que hay entre ellas hasta alcanzar temperaturas tan altas que <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpe.mpg.de\/990081\/VirgoCluster\" target=\"_blank\">arden con los <a href=\"#\" onclick=\"referencia('rayos x',event); return false;\">rayos X<\/a><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En el inh\u00f3spito y denso interior de estos c\u00famulos, las galaxias <strong>interact\u00faan intensamente con su entorno y entre ellas mismas<\/strong>. Son estas interacciones las que pueden aniquilar o extinguir su formaci\u00f3n estelar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El principal objetivo de la investigaci\u00f3n colaborativa de VERTICO es, precisamente, entender qu\u00e9 mecanismos de enfriamiento detienen la formaci\u00f3n de estrellas y c\u00f3mo lo hacen.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">El ciclo vital de las galaxias<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.laf5.com\/datos\/fotos\/7649_1_09272019115740.jpg\" alt=\"Resultado de imagen de Las galaxias m\u00e1s remotas del Universo\" width=\"450\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Si mueren ser\u00e1 por alguna raz\u00f3n que no hemos llegado a conocer<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cuando las galaxias desfallecen en los c\u00famulos, el <a href=\"#\" onclick=\"referencia('plasma',event); return false;\">plasma<\/a> intergal\u00e1ctico elimina r\u00e1pidamente el gas mediante un violento proceso denominado \u201cdespresurizaci\u00f3n por impacto\u201d ( <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.swin.edu.au\/cosmos\/R\/Ram+Pressure+Stripping\" target=\"_blank\">ram pressure stripping<\/a> en ingl\u00e9s). Al acabar con el elemento que sirve de combustible para formar nuevas estrellas, la galaxia termina por desaparecer y se convierte en un ente inerte en el que la creaci\u00f3n de estrellas es imposible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asimismo, las altas temperaturas que se producen en los c\u00famulos pueden interrumpir el enfriamiento del gas caliente y condensarlo sobre las galaxias. En dicho caso,<strong> el gas no es eliminado por el propio entorno<\/strong>, pero se consume durante la fase de formaci\u00f3n de estrellas. (2018)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aunque estos procesos var\u00edan de forma considerable, cada uno deja una huella \u00fanica e identificable en el gas que da lugar al nacimiento de las estrellas. El objetivo principal de VERTICO es unir todas esas huellas para conformar una imagen que explique de qu\u00e9 manera producen modificaciones los c\u00famulos sobre las galaxias.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tras <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/0908.3017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">d\u00e9cadas de trabajo <\/a>en las que se ha intentado comprender c\u00f3mo el entorno hace posible la evoluci\u00f3n de las galaxias, nuestro prop\u00f3sito es a\u00f1adir una nueva e importante pieza al puzle.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">El estudio de un caso ideal<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/0\/00\/Virgngc.jpg\" alt=\"Resultado de imagen de El c\u00famulo de Virgo\" width=\"450\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El<strong> C\u00famulo de Virgo <\/strong>est\u00e1 en la ubicaci\u00f3n perfecta para llevar a cabo un estudio detallado de su entorno. Se trata del c\u00famulo de galaxias masivo m\u00e1s cercano a nosotros y se encuentra en proceso de formaci\u00f3n, lo que significa que podemos obtener instant\u00e1neas de las diferentes fases del ciclo de la vida de las galaxias. Esto nos permite ampliar el cuadro que explica c\u00f3mo se apaga la formaci\u00f3n estelar en los c\u00famulos de galaxias.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Las galaxias del C\u00famulo de Virgo han sido observadas desde pr\u00e1cticamente todas las longitudes de onda del espectro electromagn\u00e9tico (por ejemplo, de radio, \u00f3ptica y ultravioleta), pero <strong>a\u00fan no se ha estudiado el gas que forma las estrellas con la sensibilidad y resoluci\u00f3n necesarias,<\/strong> ya que la longitud de onda es milim\u00e9trica.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/65\/56\/64\/6556641f90b2a906864bf12afa5d1868.jpg\" alt=\"Resultado de imagen de \u00ab \u00a1Sabemos tanto de las estrellas!\u00a1Nos queda tanto por saber!
