La gran mayor\u00eda de las pruebas hasta la fecha se han encontrado en el hemisferio norte\u00bb, apunta el investigador. La investigaci\u00f3n comenz\u00f3 hace varios a\u00f1os cuando un grupo de cient\u00edficos chilenos que estudian capas de sedimentos en <strong>Pilauco Bajo<\/strong>, un sitio paleontol\u00f3gico y arqueol\u00f3gico del <strong>Cuaternario <\/strong>muy conocido, reconoci\u00f3 cambios asociados con el evento de impacto. As\u00ed se encontr\u00f3 presencia de esf\u00e9rulas microsc\u00f3picas interpretadas como formadas por fusi\u00f3n debido a las temperaturas extremadamente altas asociadas con el impacto. La capa que contiene estas esferas tambi\u00e9n muestra concentraciones m\u00e1ximas de <strong>platino y oro,<\/strong> y las part\u00edculas de <strong>hierro nativo <\/strong>rara vez se encuentran en la naturaleza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Estudios anteriores ya hab\u00edan revelado una \u00ab<strong>interrupci\u00f3n ambiental muy grande a unos 40 grados al sur<\/strong>\u00bb. Estos incluyeron un gran evento de quema de biomasa evidenciado, entre otras cosas, por micro-carb\u00f3n y signos de quema en muestras de polen recolectadas en la capa de impacto. \u00abEs, con mucho, el evento de fuego m\u00e1s grande en esta regi\u00f3n que vemos en el registro que abarca miles de a\u00f1os\u00bb, dijo Kennett. Sin embargo, al contrario de lo ocurrido en el hemisferio norte donde se dio el fr\u00edo y las lluvias asolaron el planeta, en el sur ocurri\u00f3 justo lo contrario: <strong>el ambiente se volvi\u00f3 un infierno<\/strong>. \u00abLos conjuntos de plantas indican que hubo un cambio abrupto y mayor en la vegetaci\u00f3n de las condiciones h\u00famedas y fr\u00edas en Pilauco a las condiciones c\u00e1lidas y secas\u00bb, afirma Kennett.
