Cuando horadan el suelo en busca de f\u00f3siles con los que reconstruir el pasado, los cient\u00edficos observan que en ese momento desaparecen <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2017\/08\/22\/ciencia\/1503425919_217876.html\">la mayor\u00eda de los dinosaurios<\/a> y pr\u00e1cticamente el 75% de los seres vivos de la \u00e9poca. En ese estrato, Luis \u00c1lvarez y su hijo Walter descubrieron en los ochenta una gran cantidad de iridio, un material muy raro en nuestro planeta pero abundante en meteoritos y asteroides. A partir del iridio calcularon que una roca de 10 kil\u00f3metros de di\u00e1metro procedente del espacio fue, probablemente, la culpable de aquella hecatombe.
